interruptions is an independent non-profit initiative enabling non-standardized experimentation on architecture, design and culture in the cultural zone of the Levant and releases publications, (independent or collaborative), in various forms, shapes or contents framed by a shared commitment to the contextual existence we operate within and contribute to.
[a] Interruptions was found to liberate thinking from standardized patterns [b] Project was initiated by a group of university students and fresh graduates in Jordan from fields of Archietcture, Design and Art [c] Interruptions aims to challenge the common tendency to isolate architecture and arts from social, cultural, economic and political context [d] Interruptions aims to introduce experimentation as a methodology that extends ‘thought’ beyond the obligation to produce results or solutions but to arouse arguments about issues that are often marginalized or muted [e] Interruptions has released four publications so far [e.1] Power issue: was the first publication released by Interruptions, self-funded and distributed to over 500 people [e.2] Idiom issue: second publication distributed 1000 copies and featured collected opinions and critique from Jordan’s top architects, artists, anthropologists and social figures. [e.3] Mimarion Special Edition: a collaboration with Jordan Engineers Association to release a conference publication [e.4] Banana Edition: Last release designed by Syntaxdigitial and reintroduced Interruptions after restructuring both its content and design [f] Interruptions conducted a workshop with Reloading-Images research in Damascus funded by the European Delegation; workshop was titled, Damascus : Narratives on Place and the City, interruptions also contributed to the draft publication released by Reloading Images [g] organized and moderated Amman Centennial Forum held on the 21st of February and attended by more than 600 people; Forum presented the youth perspective on the transformation of the city of Amman, keynote speakers were architecture students selected by Interruptions and audience were to direct questions to mayor through three Q&A sessions [h]Interruptions hopes to extend further in the Levant and aims to engage creative thought for that each contributor is a part of the making of interruptions. Banana Edition has featured contributors from Jordan, Syria, Berlin, Mexico and Canada [i] Interruptions future projects include [i.1] conducting a workshop in Amman by the of March on analyzing urban behavior patterns through photography [i.2] Holding a series of seminars at Jordanian architectural campuses and maybe Syrian and Lebanese [i.3]releasing Interruptions fifth publication by the end of May, 2009.
